This project is located along Rock Road, one of the oldest trunk roads leading out of Kuching – named after a rock formation nearby. Our design was a reaction against the usual steel framed show room which could seem a little fragile and impermanent; the site needed a building with size and mass in keeping with the locality.
The building’s form is derived from the local building setback requirements and a wish to raise the ‘showcase’ to gain more visibility. We use a limited palette of local building materials to manage costs and test out ideas such as the ‘shiplap’ external cement render and vent-block walls.
The result is a building that is more sustainable as it NOT only uses local material only; it employs local craft and skill as well – making our design work harder.
